Yes indeed.  You should then be able to do a default laptop install of Red Hat, and something similar for SuSe (not up on current versions), or even Mandrake.  With 96MB of RAM any current distro will work fine so long as you slim down the install (i.e.: do a custom install and drop packages you'll never use.)  What still won't work:  StarOffice and KDE will still be slow, but usable if you must.  AbiWord/Gnumeric/Dia (the Gnome office apps) will be quite spritely, OTH.

FWIW, I picked up a 10GB hard drive for my Libretto for under $100, new.  I suspect you can do the same for your IBM, especially on eBay.  Do that and no slim down is needed--run a full distro to your heart's content :)
