Someone here kept bugging me to try ncftp like it was the greatest thing
since sliced bread, but I dragged my feet until just recently.
	It's the greatest thing since sliced bread. Thanks, whomever, and
my apologies for not remembering.
	I don't know if it's exactly what you're after, but I did just do
a:
	ncftp -R /usr
...from one machine to the other two nights ago; transferred the whole
tree, working, without a hitch.

Debian.
	In the days of yore, redhat -> suse <mklinux/linuxppc -> freeBSD>
[slackware debian minix <beos> susePPC mandrake <netBSD/OpenBSD> plan9
gentoo] back to Debian for now. Harder to set up initially, easier to run
when finally in place.
	I have in mind to point out that Debian is much easier to install
if you have a working install from another distro and can crib what you
can't figure out.
	Once you have a working install, it's pretty portable (and you may
never need to do another).
