I'm assuming you haven't forgotten the COM ports are called /dev/ttyS0 
(uppercase 'S') rather than /dev/ttys0 :-)

This may be completely off track but I have seen at least one internal
(win)modem sitting up on /dev/ttyS14 (a Lucent winmodem IIRC).
