No ... the readme is a little unclear, now that I look at it (I'm
looking at 4.2.0, but it probably hasn't changed much). It says
that Gimp-Print includes a CUPS driver, and then later in the CUPS
section it says "Gimp-print 4.2 requires CUPS 1.1.9 or higher".
I think what they mean is that if you choose to use CUPS, and
run configure --with-cups, then you should make sure your CUPS
version is up-to-date. In my case, I don't have CUPS at all, so
I just ran configure with no arguments. After I ran make install
for gimp-print, printconf-gui showed me more printers than it
had before. I do see Stylus C40UX on the list.

Re running CUPS and lpr at the same time: I think they're mutually
exclusive, and you have to pick one or the other spooling system.
CUPS may well be the way of the future (Apple is using it now for
OS X; I wonder if they'll contribute anything back to the community?)
and the linuxprinting.org folks are encouraging its use; it may well be
the right spooler to use in the long run. But my experience has been
that if you just want to get printing working right now with the least
hassle, LPRng seems easier and requires less research.
