I got an Epson Stylus C40UX when I ordered my new VAIO (which hasn't
arrrived quite yet.) It's got a USB connector, and so does my regular
machine, so I thought I'd try to hook them up and try out the color
printer. I spent over 2.5 hours arguing with settings, drivers, and
installation stuff before getting extremely frustrated (wanting to boot
the whole damn system out the window) and giving up. Here's what I did,
along with the problems.
I'm running RedHat 7.2, with Ximian Desktop/Gnome/sawfish. Default
printing settings were installed, and they worked fine for my Canon
BJ-200ex (old, old printer. Works, mostly.)
First, I su'ed. Then I ran printtool, which runs printconf-gui. I added
a new printer, and it detected the Epson USB printer. Only in the list of
drivers, there was no stylus C40. So I picked generic postscript printer,
sent a test page, and it never printed out. So I tried various other
Stylus printers, none of which worked.
So I googled, found linuxprinting.org, and looked up documentation
relevant to this printer. It was recommended to use cups and gimp-print
to get this printer working. To install cups, you must first uninstall
all other printing things, like lpr. This is where the problems start.
I rpm -e gnome-print, with few problems. There's some dependency issue,
so I erase that, too. Then I try to erase printconf, and there's a
dependency issue with printconf-gui, so I 'rpm -e printconf
printconf-gui'. Which chugs along, then hangs. So I ctrl-C and try
again. Repeat. At one point, I get the error that printconf-gui is
not installed, so I cheer weakly and rpm -e printconf. Which chugs along
and hangs. At this point, I'm getting throughly irritated, and then I get
an error:
error: db3 error(-30998) from db->close: DB_INCOMPLETE: Cache flush was
unable to complete
rpmdb: Overflow page 2746 of invalid type
error: db3 error(-30985) from db->verify: DB_VERIFY_BAD: Database
verification failed
printconf is still installed, and LPRng is as well. I've tried everything
I know of (which, admittedly, isn't much), and I'm completely flummoxed.
I have RH7.2 cds in the event that I need to reinstall the original
printing services (I have a couple papers to print out for class that are
due on Tuesday).
Any help is greatly appreciated.
TIA,
Conni
