Start up a runlevel other than 5. If the messages are coming from
rc.local, then you will still see them. One way to do this is to change
to a console (<ctrl>-<alt>-<f1>), then log in as root and do 'telinit
3'. Hopefully, you will then see the same error messages as before, but
X won't start.
