You get this error message if anything that lilo tries to map into the
mapfile (typically /boot/map) results in a section size of zero sectors.

One of the possible causes for this is having any files referenced in
lilo.conf which do exist but have a size of zero.  I once ran into the
same problem with a 0-byte welcome message file (/boot/message)...

So, check for any zero-size files (most probably in /boot) -- or simply
run lilo in verbose mode, e.g.

  lilo -t -v -v -v -v -v    (newer versions also take "-v 5" instead)

for maximum verbosity and test-only mode.  Then, meditate on the last
message you see before lilo aborts -- or post it here :)
