[techtalk] backup solutions

I guess I'll drop in my limited experience
here.

I previously used Seagate's BackupExec, for
WinNT, but the newer versions (with more
features) had trouble backing up a non-windows
network share plus I really wanted to do the
backups from the linux server itself.

So I installed the SCSI Python 12/24 GB backup
drive in my RH Linux box, which recognized it
with no problem, and I use this (type of)
command to do my backups:

tar -cvpf /dev/tape --label='Working Backup ' /home/working > logs/010519.log

Then I have a tape backed up in a semi-
globally recognizable format (i.e. I can get
to it from any *nix bod) and the archive
is cataloged for easy searching.

The tape hardware cost me c. $300 and
Sony tapes cost around $15.

I learnt what I know about backups from
a website that I have lost the link...
