The first way that comes to mind is to use an IMAP server as an
intermediary. You can copy all your messages there and down again (you
could, of course, install IMAP locally). This only works if you have a
working copy of OE, though.

FYI, I still use OE as my main e-mail client, because, so far, it's the one
that's easiest for me to use without a mouse. I really should get to know
more Linux e-mail clients.

I haven't started using 2.4.x yet, so my advice might not be right on ...
Check /etc/modules to see if APM is being loaded. If not, then you will
probably want to add it.

I'm not sure if this applies to 2.4, but it worked for me in 2.2 when I ran
into the same problem. Someone suggested I add the line

  append="apm=on"

to lilo.conf.  This worked just fine (once I realized that the line needs to
be before the kernel descriptions instead of at the end of the file).
