You sure could take a look at VNC : http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/

Just launch a VNC server on a machine you are sure will not reboot in a
certain amount of time, and connect to it from home, work, everywhere
with your VNC client.

You can even use SSH to allow for privacy and/or compression.
