[techtalk] Computer clock way slow

most of the ones with software switches will query the CPU, and if it can,
it sends the speed (voltage and multiplier) and the BIOS applies the
appropriate values so that there is nothing to set (my ASUS was like this).
If it does not get a response, it sets the CPU to the lowest supported speed
(acording to the manual).

Pure speculation: Maybe so it can switch the switchable power supply
to
the right values? 'Though my laptop's AC adapter switches automatically,
I've seen desktops with a manual switch.
Which brings me to something that get to me - MBs with software setups
for things like CPU speed and voltage. Isn't that something the MB needs to
have right *before* power is applied?
