[techtalk] High speed access AND browsers AND email

Hullo again.

In our household we use a cable modem; we get a package deal from our
cable company (MediaOne) for both TV cable and internet access.  We pay a
total of $75 per month for both.  The cable company also provided us with
a cable modem which we "rent" for a nominal fee that's included in the $75
above.  It gets a hair slower in the evenings, but it's still lightning
fast compared to the phone-line hook up I had before.

As far as browsers go, I use Netscape, and I run Linux all the time.
Netscape is about 90% reliable - I have to reboot a few times a week and I
surf pretty extensively.  java in particular doesn't run well.

For email, I'm happiest with pine; I can use it from almost anywhere, it's
simple, doesn't devour space, and now with the new version I have pretty
colors to go with it, too.  Plus I can get to all of my pine stuff (email,
addresses, saved messages) wherever I can log into my machine, so it's
very portable. My law school email I read through OpenMail on the web -
it's currently the only way I cas access my school email account from
outside the law school.  Get this, they won't let students have telnet
access because they say that poses too many risks.  I hate OpenMail like
the plague.

Please excuse my low-tech evaluations. Hopefully by hanging out with you
guys more I'll grow a little more savvy.  :)
