> mount /dev/hdc/cdrom

Is this is actual command that you're using?  It looks like it's missing a 
space:
	mount /dev/hdc /cdrom

Will mount the CD regardless of what's in mtab or fstab, assuming that 
/dev/hdc is the CD drive and /cdrom is available to have something mounted on 
it.

If those are true and the mount still fails, then there's going to be another, 
more informative message from mount and probably some interesting stuff in the 
log.
