Mary's got it -- I must have removed the line that mentioned it, but my 
co-author on that paper (and several subsequent ones!) is the prof who 
taught the course that got me started in the field.

I think it's pretty typical in other parts of the world as well.  Not 
all students get this kind of funding, at least not in Canada (I gather 
the funding levels for US grad students are generally higher).  But 
yes, when researchers apply for grant money they ask for salaries for 
those people they need to work for them: lab techs, students, etc.  So 
when you hear that a researcher has received a large grant, it will 
tend to go towards equipment, people, and travel rather than directly 
to the researcher.
