Mostly poking around on my own.  Once I discovered Nmap, it was all over 
:)  The man pages for Nmap are excellent, and just running scans against 
my own systems was extremely interesting.  I knew what was running on 
those systems and I could correlate what I saw on the scans to what was 
actually on the system.  Working as a unix admin helped a lot as well. 
I knew many commands that admins use in order to "check out" their 
systems to see if they're running OK - rpcinfo, nfsshell, etc.

All the Windows scanning tools (dumpacl, net view, etc) I learned while 
at Foundstone.  One of the first things I did while there was attend 
several of the "Ultimate Hacking" classes that they offer through Global 
Knowledge. A Windows system gives out a suprising amount of information 
via the SMB protocol.

(If you've got some training money, I highly recommend the Ultimate 
Hacking classes - they're definately worth it)
