Mostly poking around on my own. Once I discovered Nmap, it was all over
:) The man pages for Nmap are excellent, and just running scans against
my own systems was extremely interesting. I knew what was running on
those systems and I could correlate what I saw on the scans to what was
actually on the system. Working as a unix admin helped a lot as well.
I knew many commands that admins use in order to "check out" their
systems to see if they're running OK - rpcinfo, nfsshell, etc.
All the Windows scanning tools (dumpacl, net view, etc) I learned while
at Foundstone. One of the first things I did while there was attend
several of the "Ultimate Hacking" classes that they offer through Global
Knowledge. A Windows system gives out a suprising amount of information
via the SMB protocol.
(If you've got some training money, I highly recommend the Ultimate
Hacking classes - they're definately worth it)
