A lot of inflated salaries might still be in place because companies tend
to not downgrade someone's salary after they've been hired. Here in S.F.,
it wasn't unusual for someone to make $85k to $100k or more as a Microsoft
specialist a couple years ago. If they haven't been laid off, chances are
they didn't take a 50% pay cut or anything like that, which would mean the
average would still be high. And chances are also that not a lot of
people have been hired at lower rates because there just haven't been that
many new jobs of late.
