[Techtalk] Getting X to work on Ubuntu Feisty

Hi all,
I've been stymied by getting high resolution on a thinkpad Z61m, using
Kubuntu.
I've followed varied instructions around the net, which first say to
download and enable the ATI driver, which I did - it's the fglrx driver.
I then was supposed to use aticonfig, which changed my xorg.conf file:
aticonfig --initial --lcd-mode=full -fsaa=on --resolution=0,1680x1050
--overlay-type=opengl (or Xv - I've tried both, neither work.)
I then modify the xorg.conf file to enable 3-d support (it doesn't seem
to matter whether I do this or not.)
When I restart X, it just hangs. I get a little cursor at the top left
of the screen, and no indication from the terminal I started X from what
the problem is.
I'm stumped.
Thanks!
Peace,
Michelle
