You should be able to already. I watch DVDs on my Fedora Core 6 and 
have done for a few years. It used to be a bit of a pain to set 
everything up, but it is a lot easier now. 

What distro are you running? Some distributions are more restricted
in others in what software they ship. So on some of them, the programs
will be on your machine already. And in others you will need to collect
them off the net. (For example, a lot of people using Fedora use the
Livna site, which supplies things that Fedora does not.)
