[Techtalk] Mandrake 9.1 freeze-ups: was it XFS?

Hi, everyone,

I am writing this on my main desktop system. I just reloaded Linux on
it yesterday, and it now seems to be problem free running Red Hat Linux
9. Before this I was running Mandrake 9.1 for about two months. Lately
the system would freeze up for no apparant reason. It was locked hard,
and nothing but a hard reboot would get it going again. There was
nothing in the logs. It got progressively worse until the system was
pretty much useless.

I've experienced this once before with a previous version of Mandrake.
The one thing that comes to mind is that I used XFS as my filesystem of
choice. I used to support a lot of SGI systems, so I had naturally
supported SGI under IRIX and thought that it was an outstanding
journaling filesystem. I'm just wondering if it is broken under Linux
and degrades with time.

Any comments?

Regards,
Caity
