You're right that simply power-cycling periodically is not an ideal fix.
But I am convinced (at least in our case) that the problem was/is upstream,
and here we have to deal with a company called SBC (sonuva b*
communications, the old SoutWest Bell that bought out PacBell). Like just
about everything from Texas, they are utter nincompoops who haven't a clue
how to run a network, much less troubleshoot a problem.
	They were, for example, completely useless in trying to fix this
problem -- you'll note all the references I've made so far were to people
from other companies.
	But the only dsl pipeline we have is through them. So.
	My point here is to agree with you, but to point out that
sometimes you simply have no access to the upstream problem and have to
try to "route around" it somehow.
	That's our case, and very possibly Carla's too...
