hi tabatha,

thanks so much once again for digging up some great info for me... im=20
progressing, still trying stuff... but not getting too far i'm afraid...=20
still... i think we're very close, just no banana quite yet ;-)

it sure is :-)=20

it does rather... but i've learnt that with linux sound, this does tend t=
o be=20
something that the system spits out at you even with the right settings..=
=2E.
im not quite sure what is causing it.. although its possible i could try=20
re-setting the modem and soundcard through the thinkpad BIOS utility to=20
different irq's... that sounded rather scary, particularly as i've only j=
ust=20
got the modem working - but might be the answer.... a bit like swapping c=
ard=20
positions i guess, which is usually the cause of these kind of 'phantom'=20
device conflicts in sound on a desktop....
yeah, i've had agony with this one for a while, had this problem for ages=
 on=20
my desktop when i first started with linux and could never get it to work=
=20
until someone pointed out that at that stage, RH and Mandrake had a bug (=
this=20
was around Mdk 7.0) whereby if you configured the modem first, and then=20
sound, you would get a device conflict even if you set them both correctl=
y.=20

oh the joys of config! ;-)

then again... on the tp600, irq 11 is shared by various things including =
the=20
mwave modem (dsp)... its been confusing working out exactly which resourc=
es=20
that the soundcard is occupying ( i eventually took the ones listed in=20
Windows Device Manager to be right.. i hope!)
=20
i'm beginning to suspect i might need to fiddle with the BIOS, as sound=20
generally likes to be irq 5 in linux.... i've never seen a soundcard on i=
rq 9=20
before... (then again, i've never installed linux on a laptop before, onl=
y on=20
desktops)...=20

i've had a look at sndconfig, but unfortunately its not going to work as =
i'm=20
trying to run ALSA (which is reccomended on the pages you suggested for=20
thinkpad sound) as OSS tends to think the chip is a cs461x, which apparen=
tly=20
wont work at all.... this was in the first of the articles you found, whi=
ch=20
so far i've found excellent, its the best one i've read yet.=20

the strangest thing is the two sets of results - one with unresolved symb=
ols=20
but no mention of device conflicts (when using insmod), one with device=20
conflicts but no mention of unresolved symbols (using modprobe).=20
then there's the fact that the soundcard doesnt seem to be showing up in=20
/proc/interrupts... which is worrying. im running devfs - im not sure if =
that=20
complicates things... but i use it because mandrake does by default and i=
m=20
used to it....=20

anyhow... thats my progress so far...
thanks so much one again for your help... im sure we'll get to the bottom=
 of=20
this sometime! and the detective work is half the fun ;-)

best wishes

miriam
