[Techtalk] My X display is fubar

I have Mandrake 8.2 installed and have run into a problem when X tries
to start. I have recently installed a new CDRW, and the problem
started after it was installed. I had the same problem when I tried to
connect a printer to my parallel port, after disconnecting the
printer, and going into rescue mode (without really doing anything)
and then rebooting, the problem disappeared. However, I am not wanting
to take out the CDRW.

Currently, when I boot Linux, I get through the boot process. I see
"login" appear on the command line, which is normal. Usually, right
after that I get the graphical login screen. However, now I get a pink
and white 1" tall bar at the top of the screen, which looks like my
LILO squished & repeated. I cannot do ctrl-backspace, I cannot get to
a command line with ctrl-alt-f1. I cannot even do the 3 finger salute
with ctrl-alt-delete. The computer appears totally frozen. I can boot
into the failsafe kernel, but nothing I have done in there has solved
the problem.

So, my question is - how do I find out what is causing the conflict
that is causing this problem? Can I get to some X logs via the
failsafe login?
