Pinging your own addresses only tells you whether the lo interface is up
or not.

Theres only one default `gateway' per machine. 

It would help if you could mail me the output of `ifconfig -a' and
`netstat -nr'. 

Does dmesg show any unusual messages about the network
interfaces?
