Late to the party, but I'm also on the pro-snappy-comeback side.
There are times when a snappy comeback serves only to humiliate
someone, but there are more times when it might make people laugh,
then think.

This is especially true if there are other people around. A simple
logical or angry response won't help change anyone's mind, while
a witty riposte that makes people laugh makes people pay attention
and maybe take what you're saying more seriously.

That's in theory. In practice, of course, I never think of one in time.
