Hey there,

>That being said I wonder if its actually better to have just one
>install with all the software I need? I think most packages can be
>installed on every distro after all.

I usually do this, but if I'm thinking of installing something
elaborate or making a big change to my current way of doing things,
I'll sometimes try it in a virtual machine first.

>Alternatively there's always the multi boot option, but that seems
>like it could get confusing very quickly with all the partitions
>needed.

The main drawback for some of us is that we just don't want to shut
down and boot up again to switch tasks, so we tend not to use
whatever is available in a multi-boot option.

>I'm mostly wondering if anyone has tried something like this before
>and if there is anything you could tell me that you wish you knew
>when you were at my stage.

Here's an article I wish I'd read when I first started using
VirtualBox:

https://blogs.oracle.com/scoter/networking-in-virtualbox-v2

It does a nice job of explaining the difference between the network
modes and lets you know what the default one is. As enthusiastic as
you are about exploring and trying new things, I can imagine that one
of them may end up being sharing information back and forth between
virtual machines or between the host and a virtual machine. Network
modes are indispensable when it comes to determining the best way to
go about communication from and/or with virtual machines.
