Thank you Alison and Mani. Sorry about the slow reply.
The status update is that while I was able to boot from the live disk,
the data was wiped too, so I was unable to retrieve anything - it was
a test machine so there was some data loss but I had older backups.
Thanks for the helpful tips though and this is a good reminder that I
should get around to upgrading my old backup scripts to sync between
machines :)
