Allrightythen goils, video problem is solved. It was bad kernel
drivers for my Intel video, and the solution was either to roll back to
an older kernel, or install updated drivers from the Oibaf PPA,
https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/graphics-drivers/ (my media
server runs Lubuntu 13.10)

I was seeing this error in dmesg when I tried to play any video in VLC
or MPlayer:

*ERROR* kicking stuck wait on render ring

It seems that the Oibaf PPA is popular and well-known for high-quality
graphics drivers for Intel, NVidia, and Radeon. Well-known except by
me. I installed the Oibaf drivers and regression cured!

Mediaserver works now, hurrah, I can play my DVD .isos just fine and
the menus work. Now I can look at the resources you gave me for getting
to know XBMC better. Thanks much! Yay couch potato time :D
