Heya, I have partial notes that sadly do not tell how I figured it out, but I 
had the same problem a few years ago. It was a faulty switch. I would check 
all the hardware first-- re-seat the NIC, swap switch port, swap cable, and see 
what happens. 

RHEL 3? Is that the one with the little people inside the case flipping bits 
like crazy?
