Some things (I think it's part of Gnome) mount cdroms, usb drives,
etc, automatically into subdirectories of /media, so I'd be inclined
to leave /media free for such things.

Is there much data already on the machine?  As your initial email says:

I'd be inclined to re-install and tell it to start afresh...
