I think we have a winner.  It boots all the way to the desktop and seems to
do OK with all the hardware.  I guess I'll be learning the voodoo of sudo
and apt-get.  I might give Fedora one more shot with some more different
boot options.  But if it's a no-go, then I'm jumping ship.
