BTW, I did see that you said the top level was owned by root,
but thought it was worth mentioning the numeric-ID problem anyway
since it comes up a lot. But I'm guessing more that the filesystem
itself was created owned by root.

Have you tried chowning it to yourself, and seeing if that persists
through unmounting/remounting?
