Hi Maria,

it could be that the lack of log messages indicates that the machine itself (and its NICs) is operating normally (or at least, in a way that it can't tell apart from normally) and the problem is elsewhere, such as congestion on the network.  While the machine is in this state, you could try "ping"ing other machines from it, pinging it from other machines, and pinging other machines on that network segment from each other.  You could also try using something like tcpdump or wireshark to find what's happening on the network.  I wouldn't be looking at replacing the motherboard yet.
