I was using for a while and contributing to YARP -- yet another robot 
platoform, you can find more information here [1]. yarp is part of a 
European Research project (well, a little bit more than that) called 
robotcub [2]. It's all GPL and even the robot it is developed alongside 
with (icub) has open hardware specifications.

It's not exactly a LinuxChix endeavour, but a lot of really cool and
