[Techtalk] secret processes?

Agreed, this is not very Linux like. Offhand, I don't know what process
pidgin calls by default. I know you can change Pidgin to specifically call
the sound server of your choice, giving you control over the process. I
googled & found a description of how to do it with screenshots:

Basically, in Pidgin go to Preferences - Sound. At the top, set the Method
to "command". You can then use something like "aplay -q %s". Hope that helps
