Thanks Mandi.  I forgot to say that those machines do have highmem 
set.  

minolta 09:11:41$ grep HIGHMEM .config
# CONFIG_NOHIGHMEM is not set
# CONFIG_HIGHMEM4G is not set
CONFIG_HIGHMEM64G=y
CONFIG_HIGHMEM=y

We can't go to 64bit since we don't have the everywhere and these 
machines are for undergrads to do their class work on.   Thanks for 
the pointer.
