[Techtalk] Clearing a port

Hi, 

I have a client/server app running on Debian Linux (4.0). If the server
program is killed before the client is, the port they are talking on is
bound on the server's machine until some timeout occurs. 

I was wondering if there was a way to "reset" the port.  I don't want to
lower the time out, but I'd like a way to tell the machine to clear that
port...
