Mike,

Thanks! That IS pretty much exactly what I'm looking for. I guess I'll start
evaluating different tools.
Ultimately I'd like whatever we use to be simple, cross-platform (as much as
that is possible), and free (or cheap).

Your referenced cssh appeals to me in that its requirements seem at first
glance to be pretty basic.
