Are you sure that PHP and MySQL agree on which socket to use? IIRC,
it's /tmp/mysql.sock by default (but you can change it via --socket).
Does that socket exist? Maybe some over-engineered security policy is
keeping mysqld from creating it there... (I've seen it happen).
