Have you tried doing it like this?:

    SubSection "Display"
        Depth           24
        Modes           "1024x768" "1280x1024"
    EndSubSection

I've never tried to get a laptop & external monitor working, but I have
used multiple modes on a single monitor and that's always how I've done
it.
