This seems a bit weird, apt normally doesn't do that. Did it perchance
move the old configs out of the way, like blah.conf.<longdate> or
blah.conf.dpkg-old? I'm not sure why it would just chuck the old
configs out, unless the dist-upgrade was run with --assume-yes. (which
would be a Bad Thing(tm))
