Also, the --max-depth option of du might be of interest if you have a 
deep directory structure but are mostly interested in the top level 
directories.

If you're a visual person, there are probably several visual tools 
available. I saw one on Open Directory called JDiskReport, which is 
written in Java so should theoretically work on Linux:
