Essentially, OS X is BSD.  So you're already running UNIX, and a lot of
stuff is already ported to an OS X version.  You could start out working
with OS X and then opt to add a dual boot or change OS if you found that it
didn't work well for you.  At the very least, you might want to find someone
who runs it and see if you can look around a bit on their machine (or the
same at a store carrying iBooks/PowerBooks).
