SILO in general isn't too bad (at least for run of the mill "add a new
kernel to the boot list" type stuff).  I find it easier than working
with Grub, but YMMV.  If you have any specific questions, feel free to
ask and I'll gladly attempt to answer them.  The biggest "gotcha" I've
run into in the past with it is that if your kernel is too big it
won't boot (you won't have this problem if you stick with the Debian
kernels).

Hmm, I can't be of much help there (I don't use gnome, and I really
don't do much X stuff at all on my suns...).  If noone else here can
help you, you should ask on the debian-sparc mailing list
(http://lists.debian.org/debian-sparc/).  It's probably an issue
others have run into before.
