8-( Alas - but thanks for the suggestion! Same problem. But: I think the 
problem might be that the wxgtk libs have been compiled with unicode 
support, which Audacity version 1.2.3 doesn't like; it doesn't seem to 
be a lib mismatch, because mine are the same as people's with working 
systems. I must say, I'm really scratching my head over this one.

Any clues/suggestions/off-the-wall tips gratefully received!
