Well I am using ext3, I am running Mandrake 10, and KDE.

At this stage I think that I need to just ignore the problem and get on 
with my project.  I don't have the time to sort it out, and I certainly 
don't have the time to cause any more problems.  At least it looks as 
though the disk isn't about to fail.  I will make daily backups, and 
keep the machine off the internet as much as possible as precautions ( I 
have a separate windows box).

Thanks everyone for your suggestions, you may see more on this in a 
week's time.  Although I am happy to use windows for some things (if I 
have to) I don't like programming on windows so avoid it as much as 
possible.   Unfortunately my Linux box is old, so I will have to see 
what happens in the next few weeks.
