[Techtalk] Mounting USB devices

USB devices physically added to the system:

	- USB hub (Trust)
	- Memory stick (Transcend JetFlash)
	- Printer (HP deskjet 6122)
	- Card reader (Transcend) (attached to usb hub)
	- Mp3 player (Transcend JetFlash) (attached to usb hub)
	- External hard disk drive (Western Digital) (attached to usb hub)
	- USB floppy disk drive (Eminent)

Mandrake 10.1 has problems yes/no with these hooked up usb devices.
I'll explain.

I boot up with everything attached, and harddrake2 (hardware
detection under Mandrake) detects the lot.

Before, I could only mount a few devices, and this seemed random
(first the compact flash card & the mp3 player, then the memory
stick & the compact flash card, and so on).

When I tried mounting any other device (whatever the system thought
was device 3 and on), "mount" complained of non-existing devices. I
looked into /dev, and found sda-sdn, and only sda1 and sdb1, which
explained why it only mounted two devices. I then created devices
sdc1-sdn1 by copying sdc to sdc1 and so on.

	#cp -R sdc sdc1
	#cp -R sdd sdd1
	...

I created additional mount points under /mnt & adapted /etc/fstab (*)
also. I could then mount the rest of my usb devices. I was so happy
at that point, I wrote an article on this - a little too early:

( (*) There is a difference between what harddrake2 detects and what
is in /etc/fstab.)

The only problem that's left now is, and the reason I'm posting is,
by rebooting the machine, the /dev files I created disappear, the
file /etc/fstab is overwritten, and I can start anew!

How do I keep my /etc/fstab, and my /dev files?

Any help to solve this is appreciated!

Marleen
