Some recommendations:

As a newbie, join NewChix. This one should be less techie and you
shouldn't get any replies that may be interpreted as demeaning as you
lack the experience of the high tech techtalk list. It's much more
friendly to the so-called "dumb questions" (none of which are really
"dumb").

Next, what programs are you using under windows now that you want to be
able to do under Linux, and why do you like that software in the first
place? The reason I say "why you like it", is that there are many
different programs in Linux that will do what you want, you may not feel
comfortable with that solution, while another one will make you feel at
home.

It's like Microsoft Office: ApplixSuite has a look and feel that is much
more comforatable (costs about $100 US) where as StarOffice/OpenOffice
have an unfamiliar feel (about $75 US/free).

This type of detail is not shown on the Russian site, although it does
list quite a few alternatives. You might consider using the Russian site
as a launching board to ask more detailed questions about the software
and if there are any others not listed there.
