I don't know about Gnome, but in the KDE environment you can use
Konqueror to connect via ssh to a server. It uses the fish protocol.
You enter it in the address field like this:
fish://user@host.com
or
fish://user@111.222.333.444
You can user either a hostname or the IP address. Both works fine.
If entered like above you will end up in the user's home directory. If
entered like ...host.com/ you will be at the root level.
Once you are there, you can browse and copy files just like you would
do locally.
Maybe the Gnome filemanager can do the same?
