Scilab is nice, and very similar to Matlab.  It's not quite a complete 
replacement for Matlab, but it does a pretty good job.  I found it 
mildly annoying as I become a better matlab hacker, because the syntax 
tends to be slightly different.  But that's the only thing that I 
remember really bugging me about it.
