[Techtalk] Freeing up parallel port

I use RedHat 8.0, with cups for printing.

I sent a job to one of my printers, and then immediately sent another.
For some reason this seemed to upset something, because the first job
printed, and then I just got error messages saying that the parallel
port was busy.  I tried deleting the unprinted job and resending it,
and I also tried restarting cups and the printer, but without success.

I solved the problem by a desperate method, i.e. rebooting, but what
should I have done just to clear the parallel port (/dev/lp0)?
